Have an empty box at home? Good! Then you are ready to be a FOSTER HOME. Needed for 2 young cats. Prefer a foster near our Capitol Hill location. Brother and sister cats who will need to find a new home soon. Will post photos later. They are good with adults and children, but will need their own space within your home for a period of time to adjust. Thanks!

Nothing like boxes. My kitties have kittie beds, but prefer boxes. Oh, well.

While Capital Cats has been putting its feet up for a bit, our adopters have been up to all kinds of stuff! One of our special-needs cats that we thought suffered from rickets turns out to have a way more complex history than we thought. See the update from her fabulous family below!

We have some BIG news about Capital Cat Alumnus Nessie (formerly known as Rita)! She doesn’t have rickets and is in fact a lot healthier than expected! Our vet tested her vitamin D level and they didn’t indicate rickets, so we were researching different kinds of musculoskeletal disorders. When she went in to have her teeth cleaned three weeks ago, her vet took some x-rays to check on her arthritis while she was under anesthesia, and we discovered that Nessie has a “chronic right shoulder fracture with malunion”—-she most likely was hit by a car (she also has a “loose jaw” that indicates severe trauma like a car accident) between the ages of 4-7 months old, and didn’t get medical treatment until she was picked up in a feral cat trap-and-release program when she was approximately 3, so it didn’t heal quite correctly. She pushes that shoulder’s elbow out when she walks to take weight off the shoulder and shift it to her elbow.

We took her to an orthopedic surgeon as this is quite a rare situation as feral cats don’t always survive broken bones, who said if you watched her walk and play before you saw the x-rays you wouldn’t believe they belonged to her, because she gets around so well and is so active. So for treatment, we’re alternating two different pain medications in low doses that are safe for long-term use, since she doesn’t have rickets her expected lifespan is longer than we thought it was going to be. We’ve also been prescribed playtime on the floor with toys as physical therapy, and are meeting with the Physical rehabilitation team in a few weeks to learn how to help her with Massage.

Nessie continues to be the sweetest, nosiest, friendliest, snuggliest lap cat I’ve ever met. She loves riding in the car when she can sit on my lap and look out all the windows, rolling around on the balcony, and napping in the sunny spot in our living room. She’s also going to be a big sister to a tiny human soon! Attaching some recent pics and sending thanks to everyone back in DC who helped Nessie overcome incredible odds.

[Admin note: We approve of the Nessie hair colored couch. Wise choice!]

Nessie has been FULL of kitten-like energy and zest since we figured out the right meds, so today I started introducing her to a safety vest & leash, hoping she would be interested in walks around the neighborhood. She didn’t mind the vest at all and enjoyed bird watching on our deck, and she made it halfway down the stairs from our apartment before she decided that was as far as she was comfortable going today.

You have to be 65 and over to be a "homemaker" for your cat(s).

You did it! You helped us adopt out every cat that we had in foster care! The last to go were Dyson and Dust Bunny, an incredibly bonded pair. We are grateful for one of our previous adopters who was willing to take a chance on these two, despite Bunny being a little shy and Dyson having some vision issues. We hear they are settling in and loving their new dad!

Hey Everyone,
We have the opportunity to "empty the shelter" here if we can just place this sweet pair! This doesn't happen very often. Help us out and share this post. Dust Bunny and Dyson are looking for their forever lap.

Dust Bunny and her BFF Dyson are still looking for a sunny window and a little bit of gray cat love. Can they find it in your home? Be sure to watch their video (see Videos on this page) which shares a bit about their story. They are a great pair. Dyson is the first in your lap and Bunny is right there too. They are waiting for you to bust out the Party Mix or Temptations! Better buy the industrial size!
